Atlético Baleares defeat Nàstic de Tarragona 2-0 to reach the Copa del Rey second round

As head coach Luis Blanco mentioned ahead of the Copa del Rey tie, the starting lineup was chosen “to compete at the highest level,” and that’s exactly what the players did. Compared to the last match against RCD Espanyol B, the starting eleven included Jaume Pol, Iván López, Ulrich Taffertshofer, Jofre Cherta, Gerard Bonet, and Jaume Tovar. New additions were Miguelito, Juanmi Durán, Víctor Morillo, Alejandro Pérez, and goalkeeper Juli Rivas, who made his first start.

First half

Atlético Baleares started with high intensity and hunger for victory. Just five minutes in, a great pass from Tovar found Juanmi Durán, who scored the opener to put the home side ahead.

In the 28th minute, the referee disallowed a goal for Nàstic following a corner, as one of their attackers had committed a foul. Ball possession was fairly even, but in the 33rd minute, the Balearic side put together a fine passing sequence to break their opponent’s press. The move ended with a shot from Durán that went just wide.

The first half closed with another big chance for Atlético Baleares: after breaking through the defense, Jaume Tovar found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper but sent his shot over the bar.

Second half

The second period began with Nàstic pushing for an equalizer, but they couldn’t make it count early on.

Atlético Baleares didn’t shy away from their higher-tier opponent and kept looking to extend the lead. In the 51st minute, Tovar and Durán led a counterattack that was stopped by the Tarragona defense. Shortly after, the home team had two clear chances, but the goalkeeper and defenders kept them out.

Moments later, a cross fell to Tovar, who dribbled past both the keeper and a defender, but just as he was about to score, a last-ditch defensive effort denied the goal.

At minute 65, Nàstic created their best chance: a close-range effort was cleared off the line by Juli Rivas with an excellent reflex save. Atlético’s response was immediate—they kept attacking. Despite being fouled, Tovar played on and set up a teammate, whose shot went narrowly wide.

Coach Luis Blanco made his first substitution soon after: Guillem Castell replaced Gerard Bonet.

In the 78th minute, Miguelito, Juanmi Durán, and Morillo came off for Carlos Julio, Axel Bejarano, and Florin Andone—returning from injury. The changes brought new energy, and in the 82nd minute, Guillem Castell scored to seal the win.

Tovar, exhausted, was replaced by Moha Keita in the 86th minute.

Atlético Baleares ultimately won 2-0 over Nàstic de Tarragona in a match dominated by the home team. The next round of the Copa del Rey will take place between December 2 and 4, with the draw on November 11.
